New Student Scholarships
The Department of Music awards talent-based scholarships to undergraduate and graduate music majors with superior academic records and high musical achievement. These scholarships require recipients to maintain a 3.0 grade point average, participate in a major ensemble as assigned by the Department of Music, and enroll for a minimum of twelve undergraduate credit hours per term (nine graduate hours per term). Talent-based scholarships are renewable up to four years for undergraduate students and up to two years for graduate students.
Students will be notified by mail in March/April if they have been selected for a talent-based scholarship for the following academic year.
Graduate Student Scholarships
Gretchen Valade Graduate Assistantship in Jazz
The Gretchen Valade Graduate Assistantship will be awarded to an outstanding graduate student pursuing a master's degree at Wayne State University. Candidates are identified through an application, audition, interview, and review of scores and/or recordings. The Assistantship is awarded to the candidate who displays exceptional artistry, academic excellence, professionalism, and potential for growth. Continuing Student Scholarships
The Department of Music has many scholarships available for our majors. Students can learn more about specific scholarships and apply through ScholarshipUniverse Students can also explore other funding opportunities through Wayne State's Financial Aid office..
To Apply:
- Login to ScholarshipUniverse with your Wayne State Access ID and Password
- Complete the General Application and Submit
- Complete the College of Fine, Performing & Communication Arts Application and Submit
- You will be directed to the "Recommended Opportunities" where you will see "ApplyTo" opportunities and the system will determine
what you qualify for - Select the scholarship you want to apply to and submit the application
The AcademicWorks application opens in October of each year with a March 1st deadline date. These scholarships are awarded for the following academic year.

- Login to ScholarshipUniverse with your Wayne State Access ID and Password
- Go to "opportunities"
- Select "all"
- Choose "Show Filters"
- Type in your major as the keyword
- Read the requirements for the scholarships
Please note: Institutional funds such as the Warrior, Gold or Wayne State Promise awards have been funded in part by this scholarship offer. These award may replace or reduce these funds or other institutional dollars. In addition, the sum of all aid cannot exceed the financial aid cost of attendance.
