Biography
Doug Bianchi is currently in his 19th year as Director of Bands at Wayne State University and conducts the Wind Symphony, Concert Band, and Chamber Winds, as well as teaches both undergraduate and graduate conducting courses. He is also serving his sixth year as Music Director of the International Symphony Orchestra Doug Bianchi is currently in his 23th year as Director of Bands at Wayne State University. He conducts the Wind Symphony, Concert Band, and Chamber Winds, as well as teaches both undergraduate and graduate conducting courses. In addition, he is currently Music Director of the International Symphony Orchestra (Port Huron/Sarnia) and conducts the Detroit Metropolitan Youth Symphony. Doug holds degrees from Wayne State University and Oakland University.
In demand as a guest conductor and clinician, Doug works regularly with high school bands and orchestras. He is a MSBOA adjudicator and has performed at the Michigan Music Educators and College Band Director National Association conferences several times. He is also a member of the Conductors Guild, the College Orchestra Directors Association, and Society of Composers, Inc.
His extensive conducting experience includes wind band, orchestral, choral, ballet, opera, and musical theatre, and his portfolio includes numerous premier performances, commissions, and published articles. Doug has guest conducted in Bulgaria, England, the Czech Republic, Italy, Moldova, Romania, and Taiwan and has had the privilege of having several of his compositions performed nationally. Recently, he premiered his “Three Elizabethan Sonnets” for soprano and orchestra, a commission written in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the International Symphony Orchestra. This spring he will return to Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova for performances of works by Verdi, Gluck, and Beethoven. Previous to his current position, he taught in the public schools for 19 years, 15 years of them as the high school band and choir director at L’Anse Creuse High School North in Mount Clemens, Michigan. During his career he has been the recipient of several teaching and community awards and was also conductor of the Warren Concert Band for 25 years. (Port Huron/Sarnia.) With degrees from both Wayne State University and Oakland University, Doug continued advanced studies in conducting at the Conductors Institute and in Europe and is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician, working regularly with high school bands and orchestras.
