Audition Requirements

The following musical selections are posted for those wishing to audition for the WSU Wind Symphony as well as for those returning members. Read carefully to determine which selections you should prepare.
  1. The first piece, “Scenes from the Louvre”, is the required selection for all those new students seeking admission to the ensemble. The entire work should be prepared for the audition, Those returning members should prepare the work for the first rehearsal, but are not required to perform the selections at the time of the audition.
  2. “Pictures at an Exhibition” is specifically for the initial chair placement of those current members returning to the ensemble. New members are not required to play any of the following selections. However, those seeking to become a member of the WSU Wind Symphony would do well to examine the selections posted to better understand the expectations of the membership. Returning members should prepare the following: All woodwinds should prepare movement 3 (Tuileries), movement 5 (Ballet), movement 7 (Limoges), and movements 9 (Baba Yaga) and 10 (Great Gate). In addition, tubas should prepare the solo in movement 4 (Bydlo) and the trumpets the solo in movement 6 (Goldenberg and Schmyle). French Horns should prepare the opening Promenade, No. 1 (Gnome) and No. 7 (Limoges).
  3. “Dionysiaques” is an exotic, but extremely difficult work for band. Returning members of the WSU Wind Symphony should begin looking through this complex work before classes begin this fall. At the second rehearsal you will be asked to submit your part marked with those difficult measures/passages that demand to additional practice time. This will greatly assist the director in preparing the composition for performance during the semester.
