Dr. Steven McGhee works in the genres of art song and opera as a coach, collaborative pianist and conductor. He is the artistic director and principal conductor for Opera MODO, serving as a leader of the creative team for thirteen productions since joining the Detroit-based organization in 2014. With soprano Dr. Leann Schuering, Dr. McGhee formed The Art Song Doctors, a performing and education-focused duo focused on bringing art song to an expanded audience and helping younger singers explore the song repertoire.
Recent recital appearances include The Yale Institute for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut; St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Berkeley, California; the Casement Fund Song Series in New York, New York; the Art Song Festival at Baldwin Wallace University, Cleveland, Ohio; and two weeklong master classes at the Britten-Pears Institute in Aldeburgh, England. Dr. McGhee joined the faculty of Department of Music at Wayne State University in 2019. He has served on the faculties of Long Island University, New York University and the University of Michigan, where he earned his masters’ and doctoral degrees in collaborative piano as a student of Martin Katz.
