Shannon Orme



In 2007, Shannon Orme was appointed Bass Clarinet of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Leonard Slatkin. Prior to joining the DSO, she was co-principal of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Japan. Orme has also performed with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Toronto Symphony. In 2012, she was invited by Valery Gergiev to perform in Carnegie Hall with the World Orchestra for Peace in celebration of Georg Solti's 100th birthday. Her international appearances included Bergen Filharmoniske, Osaka Symphony and Stuttgart Internationale Bachakademie. Ormespends her summers at the Grand Teton Music Festival where she is also a frequent chamber musician.

Orme enjoys the many facets of performances within the DSO family. She was a featured soloist in the DSO's 2012-13 opening weekend pre-concert lecture and performed Bernstein's Clarinet Sonata with Assistant Conductor, Teddy Abrams. . She is a frequent performer in the DSO's new music and chamber music series and also collaborates with the DMC Children's Hospital Music Therapy Program. Orme especially enjoys mentoring the talented students in the DSO's Civic Youth Ensembles.
An advocate for contemporary music, she is a member of New Music Detroit, where she has collaborated with emerging composers such as Bill Ryan, Shara Worden and Marc Mellits and has participated in the group's annual 12-hour marathon, Strange Beautiful Music. Orme also performed at the Lucerne Festival Academy under Pierre Boulez for two seasons as well as the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble. Orme is a dedicated educator and conducts clinics throughout the Midwest. In 2008, she was a guest recitalist and lecturer at the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium. She has also taught at Eastern Michigan University and appeared as an Artist-in-Residence at Oakland University, Central and Western Michigan Universities.
Upon graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy, Orme attended Northwestern University (B.Mus.) and University of Southern California (M.M.). Her principal teachers include Richard Hawkins, J. Lawrie Bloom and Yehuda Gilad.
When Orme is not performing, you may find her planning her next adventure - usually on a bicycle. She resides in Ferndale and also enjoys gardening, cooking and exploring everything Detroit!
Shannon Orme is a Buffet Crampon Performing Artist and performs on Festival Clarinets and a Prestige Bass Clarinet. Her recordings include the Mozart Concerto on AVEX records.
