Biography

Wendy K. Matthews is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Wayne State University. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Peabody Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music degree from the University of Maryland-College Park, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education degree with a concentration in educational psychology and instrumental conducting from George Mason University. Prior to joining the faculty at Wayne, Dr. Matthews led the music department at Northern Virginia Community College as Assistant Dean. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, music theory, and conducted wind ensembles and orchestras at the University of Maryland, Georgetown University, George Mason University, and Northern Virginia Community College. Dr. Matthews additionally taught elementary and secondary school instrumental music in Virginia and Maryland. In 2009, she founded the Northern Virginia Community College Summer Band Camp.

Her research on social cognitive processes, motivation, and music learning has been presented at state, regional, national, and international conferences in addition to being published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Psychology of Music, and The International Journal of Educational and Psychological Assessment. Dr. Matthews serves as guest conductor and adjudicator, most recently conducting the 257th Army Band “Band of the Nation’s Capital”, Prince William Concert Band, and the George Mason University Chamber Orchestra and George Mason Wind Symphony as well as adjudicating for Festivals of Music and Music in the Parks. She also performed as trumpet soloist in the Washington Metropolitan Area and performed as a member of the Virginia Grand Military Band and Tempered Brass Quintet.
