A significant part of a music student's experience in the Department of Music centers around performance ensembles, and several have achieved international reputations. For example, the Wind Symphony was the first U.S. college band to tour the People's Republic of China, the Men's Glee Club has taken first prize three times at the prestigious International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band I and Jazztet have performed to enthusiastic audiences at the Montreux, Switzerland Jazz Festival.
Throughout the academic year, the Orchestra, Women's Chorale, Concert Chorale, Choral Union, Opera Workshop, Jazz Lab Bands and Jazz Guitar Ensembles present concerts both on and off campus. The Symphonic Chorus, the combined mixed choral ensemble, also performs regularly with the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra and the Brazeal Dennard Chorale.
Outside the Department of Music, students with performance ambitions find that the Detroit area is an excellent place to gain experience. Advanced jazz and classical players perform at churches, restaurants, social occasions and other events featuring live musicians. Some can be heard in local bands playing rhythm and blues, rock and alternative music. These opportunities give students performance experience that can be a great advantage in the "real world" after graduation.
