Jump Start

August 5-9, 2024

Jump Start is a one-week intensive program for new (first-year) students, transfer students, and current/returning WSU students to get a jump start on the Fall semester. Each day, students will experience classroom workshops offering an introduction to the theory and musicianship courses that serve as a foundation for the music curriculum, and will have the opportunity to learn more about the University and the Department of Music, right alongside other music students! Participants will build fluency and confidence in the skills that form the foundation of the undergraduate music degree.

Participant Feedback:

The Jump Start program was very helpful in easing me into the material taught in the first semester, as I had no prior theory or ear training experience. It was very helpful to get an idea of what we would be learning. One of the specific things that was very helpful was having us sing in front of each other to practice ear training exercises. As I was extremely shy, practicing this in a smaller group of people was very helpful in preparing for the real class. Honestly, I felt that everything taught during the program was useful in preparing me for classes at Wayne. If anything, I wish the days would have been a little longer in order to cover more content. Other than that, Jump Start was extremely beneficial to my experience at Wayne State!
