Organizers announced details of the 37th annual Detroit Jazz Festival at a luncheon Tuesday at the Detroit Athletic Club. As previously revealed, jazz guitarist and songwriter George Benson will be one of the headliners, and double bassist and jazz legend Ron Carter will be the artist-in-residence. The Detroit native will perform four times: as a nonet, a trio, quartet and with a big band. The outdoor festival is Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-5 at Hart Plaza and Campus Martius. The free event has four stages total. Besides Carter, several other artists with Detroit ties will play as part of the Homecoming Series Performances, including David Weiss and Point of Departure celebrating the music of Kenn Cox and Charles Moore, Stanley Cowell Quintet, PUBLIQuartet, Kirk Lightsey and Louis Hayes and Charlie Gabriel Quartet. Randy Weston's African Rhythms & the Wayne State University Big Band also are included among the acts confirmed to perform.
